Job Summary
The Janitorial / Environmental Services Technician maintains a clean, sanitary, and infection-controlled medical environment in compliance with Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) guidance and OSHA standards. This role supports patient safety, staff health, and regulatory compliance through proper cleaning, disinfection, PPE use, and workplace safety practices.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Perform routine and terminal cleaning of clinical, office, and common areas using approved disinfectants
• Follow infection control protocols and ensure proper disinfectant dwell time
• Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces
• Sanitize exam rooms, waiting areas, offices, hallways, stairwells, restrooms, and employee work stations
• Vacuum, dust mop, and wet mop floors and mats
• Restock restroom and hygiene supplies
• Properly handle, store, label, and dispose of cleaning chemicals per OSHA/SDS requirements
• Wear required PPE at all times
• Empty trash, replace liners, and transport waste safely
• Clean and store janitorial equipment; secure supplies
• Report maintenance, safety, or environmental hazards
• Follow OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standards; report spills or exposures immediately
• Provide cleaning support for events, clinics, and seasonal needs (including snow-related entryway care)
Scheduling & Reliability
• Must be reliable, punctual, and dependable
• Availability required seven (7) days per week, including evenings and weekends
• Willingness to work special events and adjust schedule as needed
• Ability to respond to short-notice coverage requests
Confidentiality & Compliance
• Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA awareness
• Do not handle patient records, mail, or confidential documents
• Comply with all IDPH, OSHA, and facility policies
Qualifications
• Prior janitorial or environmental services experience required
• Medical, healthcare, or public health setting experience preferred
• Knowledge of infection control, chemical safety, PPE, and OSHA standards
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods
• Ability to push/pull carts and equipment
